Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
The causes of an erectile dysfunction or ed vary from one human
being to another. They can either be at a physical lever or have
a psychological origin. However, the most common medically known
reasons remain a reduction in the blood flow to the penis and nerve
damage. Let us learn about some other causes of erectile dysfunction.
Diabetes
Diabetes has been known to be an underlying reason for erectile
dysfunction.
Mounting levels of blood sugar lead to the destruction of small
blood vessels and nerves throughout the body that damage nerve impulses
thus affecting the blood flow to the penis.
Medicine
We all are aware the side effects that various drugs lead to in
and on our physical body.
Even excessive consumption of alcohol and chemical drugs are associated
with male impotence. Drugs used for high blood pressure, treating
depression, insomnia etc lead to impotency in males.
Hormone Hazards
Vary rarely, but males do observe a deficit in testosterone levels
in their body and this is the prime cause leading to erectile dysfunction.
Excessive secretion of Hormones also affects the testosterone levels.
Neurologic Causes
Neurologic conditions are also a cause for impotence as they can
interrupt the movement of nerve impulses from the brain to the penis.
Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease
are some of the neurological conditions associated with impotence.
Other conditions such as a disturbance in the pelvic region could
be a likely cause for damaging veins that lead to erection. Even
medical procedures such as a surgical treatment of the colon, prostate,
bladder, or rectum could impair the nerves and blood vessels that
are part of the erection process.
Surgery of the Prostate and bladder cancer impose a high risk factor
in causing impotence as they involve removal of those nerves that
are around the tumor.
A disease known as Peyronie's Disease also causes scarring of erectile
tissue that could lead to bending of the penis leading to a painful
erection.
When veins in the penis are unable to avert blood from leaving
the penis during erection, erection cannot be preserved. This condition
is known as Venous leak which could damage the veins in the penis.
Arteriosclerosis also results in reduction in blood flow throughout
the body and can lead to impotence.
Psychological factors
Psychological causes associated with erectile dysfunction include
anxiety, depression, and inability to perform sexually.
